Type Locality and Naming

SE corner of Fujian. The reference section is the Liuhui section located at Longhai County in Fujian Province. The Fotan Fm was named by Yin Wei-Han in 1946 (unpublished), introduced by Team 304 of Geological Bureau of Fujian Province, and surveyed by Fujian Regional Geological Survey Team in 1977.


Lithology and Thickness

Lower part is characterized by the light greyish-green and brownish-yellow sandy conglomerates, coarse sandstones, intercalated with sandy mudstones and oil shales. Middle part is characterized by the dark grey, greyish-black block basalts. Upper part is characterized by the yellowish-brown, greyish-black sandy conglomerates and sandy mudstones, intercalated with basalts and peats. The thickness varies from 110 m to 860 m in the district.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The Fotan Fm is in unconformable contact with the underlying Qinyingshan Fm or granites.

Upper contact

Covered by the overlying Quaternary deposits.

Regional extent

The Fotan formation is distributed in Zhangpu- Longhai area and Mingxi County in Fujian Province.

Six different sporopollen assemblages are recognized in the Miocene deposits.
